From FSC certified beech wood to unique handmade candleholders and vases
The story behind the handmade candleholders and vases. All our candleholders and vases start with a base of high-quality, FSC-certified beech wood. This sustainable wood comes from the forests of Slovenia, where it is carefully harvested twice a year. After that, the process of craftsmanship and precision begins and bring our candleholders and vases to life.
The Importance of Drying
Before beech wood is ready for processing, it must first dry for several months in a special drying room. This is not a simple process: we use a vacuum drying technique, which removes the moisture from the wood in a controlled way. It is very important, because if the wood does not dry properly, it may eventually crack. Drying takes some time, but it ensures that the final candleholder or vase is solid and sustainable and of high quality.
The Craft of Woodturning
Once the wood is completely dry, the actual craft work begins. Using specially tailored tooling, kind of like chisels, the beech wood is turned into the desired shape, such as a candleholder or vase. The process begins by clamping the piece of wood to the top and bottom of a machine, which spins it at high speed. The tooling is then held against the wood with precision, slowly giving the block its unique shape.
From Turning to the Perfect Finish
After turning, a hole is drilled into the wood: for a candleholder just big enough for a candle, and for a vase a deeper hole to fit the glass tube. Then the sanding begins. This is an important part of the process to make the surface smooth and even, ready for the next step: painting. The candleholders and vases are carefully sprayed in the desired color and then undergo another drying process. See the photo of the head of the blog.
Handwork with Passion
Although machines play a role in turning the wood, it is still an artisanal process that requires craftsmanship and attention to detail. In our small workplace, each piece is finished and checked by hand to ensure it meets our high quality standards.
The entire process - from the cutting of the beech wood in Slovenia to the finished candleholders and vases in your hands - is a combination of technology and craftsmanship, with sustainability and craftsmanship at its core. This makes our candleholders and vases unique and ensures that each item is not only beautiful to look at but they will also last for years due to their high quality and timeless design.
